Why are big black women *generally* very rude and snide to smaller, petite women?

I ask this, as a Black woman myself, with much trepidation. It's just a thing I have noticed. Today, when I was in the store for one of many examples, two big black women behind me in the checkout line were mocking my groceries, and snickering. One of them said out loud, "No wonder she so damn skinny, look at the $hit she eat, trees and $hit."





Then, they plopped their items on the belt all rude and slammed a divider up there only when the cashier began the conveyor. I never made eye contact with them, or spoke to them. Like I said, I'm black too. Why do people act like this? Honestly, they act like the world owes them something. This is where people get sterorypes of our people and the phrase "Actin' ghetto" from. If you do this, you need to stop. It's very tacky and tasteless.





And spinach is NOT a tree. It's a flowering plant eaten as a vegetable...in case you two are reading.

OK, they do it because they are jealous and somehow they see you as being superior to them, they have low self-esteem.

You are right their behavior perpetuates generalizations. Their behavior is is tasteless and tacky.

EDIT: STOP HARPING ON HER. The only reason she kept it within the Black realm (i.e. big black women) is because she cares about Black pple and wants to know why the BLACK women behind her were so rude and mean. There is nothing wrong with that. I'm getting tired of pple coming on here acting like you can't say how you feel about your own race! This was her experience with two Black women and as a Black woman herself, she felt deeply hurt and wants to know why her SISTAS were acting that way towards her. ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with it. We all know there are FAT pple of all nationalities, but that isn't what her concerns address. It's really addressing the relationships among Black women and how perception of beauty and self-worth are correlated and how those factors can contribute to interpersonal relationships, hence, her experience, so she has that right to say how she feels.





There is no need to have trepidation or apprehension or fear. Don't be that way. It's good that you didn't entertain them, you would've sunk to their level. But don't walk around with trepidation ok. Unless you are ONLY referring to this post. were you apprehensive about posting this? If so I can see why. But you've found one sista that understands where you are coming from.

Reply:Wow, what a generalization if I have ever seen one?? Have you ever made fun of a 'fat' lady? Or anyone chubby for that matter? I bet if they were grey you would have looked past the color and just said fat ladies. Maybe you think you are too pettite yourself so you have to target the big ladies behind you. Were you being rude to them? You also noted that you never made eye contact or spoke but they were obviously close enough to do so. Maybe they took your actions as being rude. What they did wasn't cool but to make a generalization like that and then say you too are black is soo embarrassing. They probably also know exactly what spinach is....I mean you said they were big right?


Not every fat person is miserable.








Edit: If they were her 'sistas' she could of spoke, also if you care about YOUR PEOPLE (psy maj ) you don't go off in a tone that doesn't show it...no one is harping and as she has her right to her opinion (hence the FORUM) we have rights to ours. (My opinion) She is taking away from her self to say that specifically about Black Women. God forbid one day she gets fat?? She is black isn't she? I don't have a personal prob with anyone at all. She is prob a very nice person who just got pissed...no big deal but not fair to go and generalize.

Reply:It's not just black women, honey. When I was on medicine that made me very sick, I lost a lot of weight (it was like chemo really) and I would have perfect strangers (black and white) come up and ask me if I was anorexic!

Reply:Our American media today mostly discriminates against bigger people. Media states that being thin is equal to being beautiful. This hurts to bigger sized people, so they are against smaller people. It's not just black women, but all bigger men and women. I'm sorry that this has happened to you, but you must not judge them by that (but i didnt say that you are judging them). I hope this helps.

Reply:Um... I think that is a generalization and I'm 5'5", 140 pounds (not necessarily fat but still larger than some) and I even look at some skinny girls sometimes and think stupid thoughts. They just said it outloud. These women were probably just jealous of your thin-ness. It happens. Women are catty... unfortunately.

Reply:It isn't about being black - it's about being large. Were they buying lot's of junk food/fatty stuff? Maybe they feel embarrassed, as though people are always judging them. The only way they can think of to deal with it is to take out their insecurities on others. They assume people are staring at them and jumping to conclusions, so they point out the faults that they find in others. Usually, no one notices them until they do this. It's called having a chip on the shoulder.
