any suggestions gratefully received to pit me out of my misery!

Crossword clue?
Oder

As a river, the Oder could be described as a flower (it flows).

Some lines - ode (a song and a poem) plus r (from rune, which is another word for poem) = oder.

Wordplay:

some - "'hidden word indicator"" in some "lines",

rune - (any of the letters in an alphabet used by early Germanic peoples - Oxford def.)

un(der E)uropean - EDER (anagram); starts with capital letter "E" that defines the European river flow^er at the end of the clue.

Interesting that "deer" %26amp; "reed" are Eder anagram 'feed'!!!;-)

Eder (ā`d?r), river, c.110 mi (180 km) long, rising near Siegen, central Germany, and flowing E to the Fulda River. The Eder dam, at Hemfurth, impounds one of the largest reservoirs in Germany; it has an hydroelectric power plant. The reservoir supplies water to the Ems-Weser Canal.

EDER and ODER are some of the possible answers.
